    This is a requirement of the ASME bolier and pressure vessel code.

    Before developing a welding procedure specification (WPS) for joining specific base metals a procedure qualification weld is done and all the variables used are recorded such as type of welding rod used, amperage, etc. This test specimen is then sent to a testing lab where various tensile tests are performed on it to prove that the weld is as strong as the base metal. The PQR can then be registered with the appropriate agency and used as a basis for developing a weld procedure.
