What is Watchmen about and what does the Watchmen do?

I saw the movie trailer for Watchmen and i'm going to get the comic book, but i just want to know what is it about because i don't get what the main plot is about. Can anyone tell me what Watchmen is about? Also can someone tell me what exactly does the Watchmen do in the movie/comic book?

Watchmen has one of the best endings of any comic ever. And warioman just pointed you towards a story summary which is going to completely ruin it for you. I really hope you didn't click on it, or if you did, you didn't read all the way through. I had the ending spoiled for me before I read it years ago, and I was very mad.

As a brief summary, Watchmen is written to be a more adult superhero story. If you don't love it, it may potentially bore you, I will tell you that.

The word "Watchmen" is simple another word for guard, or protector, which is what a superhero is. The word is never used in the book, except for the slogan "Who Watches the Watchmen?", which means Who makes sure the people protecting us are being responsible?

Watchmen takes place in a world where superheroes exist, but none have super powers. The one exception is Doctor Manhatten (the blue guy), who was a scientist who was in an accident which gave him god like abilities. Most of the superheroes are gone now, since the government banned them. The story begins with an old hero, a complete jerk named the Comedienne, being murdered. Another character named Rorshach (who's a bit insane) thinks that there's a conspiracy behind his death, and begins investigating, first by going around and talking to all the old heroes. The story takes off from there.

The importance of the story has to do with that it was written and is set in the 1980s. I don't know you're age, but if you're under 30, like I am, you probably don't know too much about the Cold War. From the 50s to the 80s, people all over the world were constantly afraid that the Soviet Union and the United States could start a nuclear war with each other at any moment and kill billions of people. This plays in majorly with the setting of the story.

Hi there! Watchmen is about a group of former Superheroes banding together again when one of their number, The Comedian, is murdered. Set in a distopian alternate 1985, it is a gritty and very exciting tale of highly unique characters trying to solve the mystery of their fallen friend's death. It is incredibly complex and very much a character piece instead of being a cliched superhero story, and has rightly earned its place as the most respected graphic novel of all time. The art may have dated, but the story is nothing short of immortal.
