Its one of two (the other is Sirius) Sat radio services.  They are pay services for non-commercial radio.

xm is a satlight radio. its usally a higher quality. you have to pay for it if you want to listen to it.

Satellite radio - My Girlfriend has XM and I have Sirius. The benefit of having sat. radio is that there are many many stations that each feature a kind of music (Pop-Rock-Jazz, etc.) The stations for the most part are not censored. So if the F word is used in the Lyrics, you hear the F word. To get sat. radio you need a special receiver build into your car radio - or one that transmits to your radio (which I have). There are no commercials and you can drive anyplace and listen to the same station (except tunnels LOL). There is a fee for the service but it is not that expensive in the grand scheme of things. XM  and Sirius are in the process of merging so soon both will be one and have the same monthly costs and same programming. I've included the links to both of them - I LOVE MY SAT. RADIO
