  1. Chickens take a month or two to get all their feathers. They come in a bit at a time, usually on tail and wing tips then on the rest of the body. Don't let her live outside until the feathers are all grown in. After that they are very hardy and can get by with shade/simple shelter from rain.

The chick should be red and fuzzy with awkward feather growth for awhile. She won't be full grown and laying eggs until 5 months old.

Look up hatcheries online, mcmurray is a good one. They have pix of the chicks when you click into the description.

From your description she sounds just fine. Make sure to feed the right % protein. IE starter, then grower, then layer feed. If she isn't fed right she will peck her eggs and render herself JUST a pet but a useless layer. They love treats. My chickens eat all my kitchen waste, meat too. Meat scraps give them protein and fat. They get bored with JUST chciken feed and start to get into trouble.

(chickens eat all sorts of worms and insects, similar in make up as meat, it IS okay)

Enjoy your hen, I hope she doesn't turn out to be a rooster, LOL.
