What is a 'good' annual salary in New Zealand?

What would be regarded as a 'good salary' in New Zealand, Auckland in particular?

To live in a good area of Auckland and have some level of disposable income you need to earn at least $80K NZ$.  Less than that and you will not enjoy your surroundings or have enough to actually go out and have some fun on a regular basis.  It's a very expensive place to live compared to the USA anyways.  Easily twice as expensive and clothes are almost 4 times more expensive here and petrol is almost $9.00/gallon!!

sweeneysteve well we all know hes an American who hates NZ so you can ignore his answer, petrol is actually only about $6.50US a gallon, yes still high but nice exaggeration there

as for saying $250,000 is a good salary - well yeah if you own 2 or more properties, a boat, a holiday home, go on several overseas holidays a year and like expensive wine and cheese every night yeah you'd consider that "good" to all us other "mere morals" you'd consider that a bloody fantastic wage which you could live a life of luxury on

a good salary in NZ would be anywhere $50,000 and above, in Auckland possibly you could extend that to anything $60,000 and above i mean seriously $85,000+ ??? that would see you live a VERY comfortable lifestyle.

if i can survive happily on $35,000ish working part - full time in Christchurch, saving $300 a fortnight then i don't see how you couldn't happily survive on $60,000 in Auckland

I disagree with the person saying you need $80k.  I know people who live comfortably on say $53k & go out quite a bit & own their own home as a single person & still manage to save quite a bit too.  For an idea of salaries in the different job sectors, check out these 2 websites.  (I think the national average salary is actually quite low - like $40k, but I guess most households rely on 2 working partners to live to an acceptable level - so they have $80k combined as average wage earners).

Alot of NZers move to Australia (or the UK if they can) to earn much higher salaries, but many return because they prefer our culture & think NZ is a safer place to raise kids.  Also they forget how expensive it is to buy a house in the UK & in large Australian cities like Melbourne & Sydney in Australia.  For purchasing properties, NZ is far cheaper & many people I know also own several rental properties through using their family home as collateral on a 2nd property to rent out & then from there using the equity on the 2nd property to buy a third one & so on & so on.  We have no capital gains tax here either so it's easy to profit from property (buying a horrible place, doing it up & reselling it straight away for a higher price with no tax charged on the profit made).

A good salary would be $250,000 plus, heaps get over 100k so thats not a very good salary, 2nd rate really
