  1. a 504 plan is for a child with a tempory or permant disability taht needs modifications such as a technology, an aid, braille, signlanguage, behavior plan, medical plan to be successful with the regualr mainstream curriculum-without major modifications or special instructions

    http://www.adhd-bipolar-and-beyond.com/s...

Basically you request a 504 plan to be considered if your child needs extra support in the classroom, but does not need special education instruction-this can be as soon as a diagnosis is received

once you make the request a meeting shoudl be convened with relevant school staff and yourselfif warranted-a 1-2 page document is written describing how your child wilkl be accommodated

this process is shorter and less formal than a special education evaluation where the child is usually evaluated my a education team at the school and tehnget an IEP.

you can contact the student services department or school principal to be connected to  the 504 coordinator

  2. Basically, a 504 allows a student who does not quite qualify for Special Education to receive some type of modifications/assistance in the regular classroom.

A 504 plan is often written by the Spec. Ed. teacher, but carried out by the reg. ed. teacher.  Your child should have been tested or undergone some educational or behavioral analysis and been found challenged, but not had the "numbers" for spec.ed.  If you can pinpoint what would make the child successful, that is when you get together to write and implement the 504.

The objective is for the child to be successful in school with the plan in force and that means the 504 is doing it's job.

  3. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a civil rights law designed to eliminate discrimination on the basis of disabiliey in any program receiving federal financial assistance.

To qualify under Section 504 a student must: be determined to have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life functions including learning and behavior, have a record of such impairment, or be regarded as having such impairment.

How can a 504 help my child? Section 504 ensures that a qualified child with a disability has equal access to education.  This child can receive accomodations and modifications tailored to the special need.

How to get a child covered under section 504?

A child must first be determined to have a disability that limits major life functions.  Only the school can determine if your child qualifies.

Submit a written request to the school  asking to determine if your child can get a 504 plan based on significant inpact on learning or behavior.  Request a copy of your school districts Policies and Procedures of 504 plans.

***All the above information is from www.bridges4kids.org/Section504.html

I have just researched this area thoroughly because I think that my son is eligable and am fighting for his accomodations and services at school.  Don't give up if you think that your child is qualified.  Another good website is www.wrightslaw.com

  4. A section 504 plan is for students who have disabilities that do not qualify for special education.  504 plans provide the accomodations that are needed for the student to participate successfully in spite of their disability.  Each school should have a staff member who is in charge of 504 plans (some do not...504 plans are more common in some areas, other areas try to shove everyone into special ed.), you would make a request that your child be evaluated for a 504 plan.  After evaluating the student, a conference will be held to determine if the student qualifies for a 504 plan, if so, one will be written and distributed to the child's teachers.
