  1. a 504 plan is for accomodatuions within the regualr ed classroom without the support of special education services.

It can include braille, sign language, personal aid, behavior plan, additional time, etc...

I believe it can be a temporary or permanant disability.

I do not believe that 504 students are eligible for speech, ot, pt-but am unsure of that--

while it is true taht any disability can be covered with a 504-students who have more involved needs and need in class support from a special ed teacher or a separate class get an IEP for special education so it is rare that a child who is cognitively impaired would have a 504 plan.

IEPs are often over used (illegally) for students with physical handicaps such as blindmess, deafness, paralysis that do not need special education services and only need modifications such as those mentioned withinthe regular classroom through a 504

  2. It's a written plan created by a team of professionals (i.e., a school psychologist, a teacher, an administrator, and the parents of a student) that describes the student's disability (under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, certain types of disabilities require all institutions recieving federal funds to accommodate students with certain types of disabilities) and how the school must accommodate that student's needs to provide a free and appropriate public education for them.

  3. I work in a sp. ed. department for a school district.  A 504 plan is a set of guidelines to accommodate a student who has special needs of ANY kind.  This can range from mental retardation to a child with a vision problem.  A 504 plan is designed to make accommodations to better the child's educational needs.  This plan involves parents of the child, school administrators and at times medical professionals.  This allows all involved to provide and understand the accommodations the child may need.

  4. just a differant form of an IEP which is for special educational needs.
