I know what a carbonyl group is but i dont understand what the difference between class I and class II carbonyl compounds are. Are there more classes of carbonyl compounds? can you please give me a molecular formula for a class I and class II carbonyl compound? If you can can you also possibly direct me to a graphical illustration of a class I carbonyl compound with the molecular formula C5H10O (thats five carbons, ten hydrogens and one oxygen?? thank you

  1. Sorry, but I never heard of them being 'typed'.

However the carbonyl group,  C=O  , can be found in both organic and inorganic cmpds...is this the difference?

C5H10O depicts two types of carbonyl cmpds...

aldehyde if at an end C...eg CH3CH2CH2CH2C(=O)H

ketone if at one of the three center C's...eg CH3C(=O)CH2CH2CH3

A good start for more info is  en.wikipedia.org...plug Carbonyl into the search box...gives structures and discusses both organic and inorganic forms (types?).
