  1. Coping strategies refer to the specific efforts, both behavioral and psychological, that people employ to master, tolerate, reduce, or minimize stressful events.

Two general coping strategies have been distinguished: problem-solving strategies are efforts to do something active to alleviate stressful circumstances, whereas emotion-focused coping strategies involve efforts to regulate the emotional consequences of stressful or potentially stressful events.

  2. A coping strategy is something a person uses to help him/herself get through a stressful situation and manage the feelings that arise from that.

It could be taking a warm bath at the end of a hard day. It could be doodling on a piece of paper. Other ways include; going for a walk, meeting with friends, listening to music, exercising, reading, dancing, running, writing. Lots of people will drink or use other substances to cope. Some use behaviour such as anger or humour. There are many ways to cope with the various stresses we meet in life.

Sometimes people rely on only one or a limited strategy whatever situation they face.

A person might choose to unwind by going for a swim after a hard days work. That's a useful solution and a good coping strategy but not if it is used to deal with every difficult situation. e.g. if a bill needs to be paid.

It's helpful to recognise that what might seem like strange or even destructive behaviour by someone results from him/her not having / knowing / rejecting other ways to manage feelings.
