What is a DIY alternative energy project that I can do with ordinary materials?

Question

What are something things I can build to make energy out of wind, solar, water, etc. I just want something simple that could make enough energy to power a small shack.

I would prefer to build something like this..

This claims it gets 1,000 watts

So if you know of anything like this could you please provide a link to a detailed tutorial.

Do you want to heat it too?   I've seen "heat grabbers" made from painted black foam insulation on a piece of plywood with a glass window a few inches above it.   seal it all so its airtight, except for the intake at the bottom and the output at the top.   It can heat up a good sized room in the winter with no problem.
