  1. the DV output is the same as input, it is a bi-directinal port. It is a small 4 pin connector about 1/4 inch in size with a kind of u-shape outline. (a 4 pin USB has a kind of T-shape outline). The DV connector is found on ALL miniDV tape camcorders, it is part of the universal DV specifications that manufactures have to implement.

  2. The DV port is also known as firewire, iLink or IEEE1394, but I think most people talk about firewire.  Firewire is a data bus, like USB, but with features that make it more suitable for video transfers.  It can be an input as well as an output but the input is usually disabled on European models to avoid a tax on VCRs!  If you're going to get a camcorder with a DV port (a MiniDV camcorder) you'll need a firewire card in your PC.  If your PC hasn't already got one, they're cheap, easy to install and readily available.

  3. it is the connection that allows you to play your videos from the camera onto your computer so you can then edit them.

It will be present on any current mini DV  camcorder.  It's only important if you want to edit.

  4. If you buy a mini dv camera then you need to know this. If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….

Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder.
