  1. That is a simple question with a complex answer. Democracy is a system of government by which political sovereignty is retained by the people and exercised directly by citizens. AKA people get to vote. America is a Representative democracy, where we vote for people who vote on issues for us. Other types of government like Aristocracy, Authoritarianism, Autocracy, Despotism, Dictatorship, and Monarchy vest the political power in 1 person or a select group of people. In these types of government the people have little or no say in the way they are governed. There are also many types of Democracy:

Representative Democracy: the United States, where we elect representatives who vote on issues for us. They are kept in line by checks and balances and the fact that if we don't like what they do, we can vote them out of office.

Direct Democracy: a lot of small towns and cities. This is pure democracy where everything is decided by vote. Imagine a family wanting to eat at 2 different places. They put it to a vote and the majority wins. Now multiply that by 100 and thats Direct Democracy. The reason it usually isn't used for nations is because the business of government would take 100000 times longer if EVERY issue had to be put to vote by all citizens.

Between these 2 branches of Democracy there are SEVERAL more catagories of democracy including:

    Representative democracy

Parliamentarism (which is the system in the UK and many commonwealth nations)

    Liberal democracy

    Direct democracy

    Socialist democracy

    Anarchist democracy

    Consensus democracy

    Interactive democracy

    The list is literally endless.

  2. Democracy [Gr.,=rule of the people], term originating in ancient Greece to designate a government where the people share in directing the activities of the state, as distinct from governments controlled by a single class, select group, or autocrat. The definition of democracy has been expanded, however, to describe a philosophy that insists on the right and the capacity of a people, acting either directly or through representatives, to control their institutions for their own purposes. Such a philosophy places a high value on the equality of individuals and would free people as far as possible from restraints not self-imposed. It insists that necessary restraints be imposed only by the consent of the majority and that they conform to the principle of equality.

  5. the U.S. is a representative republic. No country that I know of uses a pure democracy because they realize it would be pure madness.
