  1. Duke/duchess are the highest ranking non-royal inherited peerage titles. A duke usually is in charge of a vast amount of land called a duchy.The duchy generates income for the duke through farming,real estate rentals and other businesses.

    The non-royal  peerage,in order of precedence(importance) are:duke,marquess,earl,viscount and baron.
