  1. Experimental Design is a method to determine the optimal number of trials/experiments and how they are run to test a hypothesis, while taking into account factors that may affect the outcome. You can't run an infinite number of trials so you have to decide how sure you want to be of your answer. Some methods may allow temperature, or time, or person running the trial to influence the outcome. You can plan the order of trials to make these effects average out.

  2. A prototype of something new, the first working model.  So, you have a design that is going to be built, go over the plans carefully, and suggest any improvements that could be made before it is built.  It's easier to change the drawing than to rip apart the physical model.

  3. An experimental design is a design that has not been tested to see if the object even works. Many times something is designed, and built based on an idea with no real knowledge of whether the "machine" would even work. The Wright Brothers first aircraft could be called "experimental designs". What you are being asked to do is provide ideas that might make the item in question work better, or simply work to begin with.
