I want a revolver with great stopping power. I'm 16 (yes I know im young) But me and my dad want something to target practice and my dad also wants it for self defense....what do you reccomend for this situation? Looking for good accuracy and power but something that me and my dad can handle since this will be our first handgun...(we only have rifles)

  1. I like Colt Python revolvers in .357. They simply are the best.

  2. Caliber:  .357 Magnum (which also shoots the .38 Special family of bullets).

Make:  S&W, Ruger or Taurus.  Colt if you can find one but it will be expensive.  Best value:  Ruger GP-100 or one of the Taurus models.

The S&W Model 686 is an excellent model as are the much older and out of production Models 27 & 28.  Look for these in the used-gun market.  NOTE:  The good used ones will cost you as much or more than a new Taurus and a new 686 won't put you in the poor house.

    Good luck.

  3. My personal advice: get a .22LR handgun first. When you can hit 10 rounds in the center circle, get a bigger caliber.

A good revolver? Look into Smith & Wesson, Taurus, and Colt. I personally like my Smith & Wesson Model 686.

  4. Get a S&W or GP100 in .357 magnum. So you can use .38 special as well. And I would get at least a 5" barrel.

Yes it costs a lot but it's worth the quality.

  5. Ruger Makes a fine revolver.... One chambered in .357 Magnum would be nice....

  6. I must agree with the other answer guys. S&W or Ruger 357 Magnum is an ideal first revolver. You are paying for a quality firearm worth every penny.

If you are on a budget, Taurus makes a great product for a little bit less money. Lifetime guarantee. I have never sent one back for warrantee work. Again 357 Mag.

Because of one phrase you mentioned "Self Defense" I would recommend a 4" revolver. If it were a fun gun for target, plinking and a little hunting, then 6".

Look at the websites and check out the different models. You might find something you cant live without..

  7. I would buy a Ruger, Smith and wesson, or colt in 357magnum. Stay away from Taurus and the other off brand cheap wheel guns.

  8. My suggestion is to buy 2.  I concur with the 4" GP100 .357Mag recommendation and also with the .22 suggestion.  A Ruger Single Six revolver can be found for $250 or less used.   .22lr ammo is less than $15 for 500 rounds on sale.  You will only get 50 .38 special rounds for that.  .357 is a bit more expensive than .38, but not by a whole lot.  Even though the .22 is a single action, the practice will still make you a better revolver shooter with a double action.

  9. A Ruger GP100 in.357 would be my suggestion. Whatever you decide pick the double action revolver over a single action.

  10. Smith&Wesson, Rossi

  11. james C pretty much said it

  12. I have both the Colt Python & Colt Anaconda and love them both!!!

  13. The best choice is the tried, true, tested, and proven to be the best no nonsense man stopper the 357 Magnum.* It is comfortable to shoot and carry.* Use 125 grain jacketed hollow points for self-defense ammo.* You get two (2*) handguns for the price of one, because you can also shoot 38 caliber ammo in the 357 magnum.* Buy a 4 or 6 inch with adjustable sights in a revolver made by Smith & Wesson or Ruger in a double action.* Great Value, Great revolver.*

  14. Ruger Gp100! It's reliable and beautiful. I prefer the six-inch barrel, to squeeze every bit of accuracy and velocity possible. You can safely shoot the cheaper, more manageable .38's through it for target practice.

    Don't feel self-conscious, as my  first side-arm was a 16th birthday gift.

"Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my gun."

  15. 357 mag because you can also shoot 38 specials in it When you and your dad are target practicing you need to shoot the 38's not as much recoil but as for your dad for defense 357 hollow points are the way to go.
