  1. It is expressly used only for High Definition Televisions. It is designed to give you the best quality for an H. D. picture.

    Most all new H. D. T.V.s have a HDMI-DVI connection

If you have cable or sattlelite H.D. Channels you will get the best picture with this cable

  2. HDMI (high definition media interface) is for hd movies for example if you want to play a hd movie on your laptop and have it going on to a tv you can use this cable

  3. The DVI cable came first but only contained the wires for video.

Then they added wires for audio, changed the connector to create HDMI.

A HDMI-DVI cable has the HDMI connector on one end, and the DVI connector on the other end.  But only the video wires are connected between the two.

  4. It's a video cable that has a HDMI connection on one end, and a DVI connection on the other.

This cable can carry HD signals up to 1080p but unlike a normal HDMI cable, this cable can ONLY carry a video signal.

Many older HDTVs don't have a HDMI port but do have a DVI port, which is essentially just the video signal that HDMI normally carries.  So this cable just delivers the video part to the TV, while ignoring/discarding the audio.  Because of this you still need a separate audio cable connected to the TV and/or receiver.
