  1. HDMI is a single cable that replaces multiple cables used to transmit audio and video from a source (ex dvd player, cable box, satellite receiver) to a destination (ex television).  It is capable of transmitting HD signals.

  2. HDMI is used on High Def tvs to transmit high def sound and video.  Commonly used to connect cable boxes to tv or receiver or on gaming systems or high def dvd or bluray players.  If your tv is not HD ready then there is no use for it.
