What is a Jack?

Okay, I know that the Kings of playing cards represents real Kings from the past. I know that the four of clubs is know as the devil's bedpost. I know that the Ace of spades is known as the death card. But what are the Jacks? Are the supposed to be soldiers?

The jack was a knave in medieval times. this means that the person was a servant of royalty. They were not called jacks until the mid 19th century when playing cards were first manufactured.
