  1. The philosopher's stone is not exactly a stone. It was originally more of a concept. Alchemists, medival chemists, were pursuing two goals that the "philospher's stone" would be able to accomplish. One was to grant eternal life. The other was to turn cheap useless metal into gold.

  2. It's a fictional stone in the Harry Potter series.A stone that has the power to provide immortal life!

  3. The philosophers stone, is a suggestion of the age of alchemy, and was a purported substance, that would be an aid in the chemical transformation of base metals (i.e.lead iron etc).into rare metals particularly gold, it is a term still used, but now means, the missing part that will make the whole, the Philosophers mentioned were not as we understand them today, but was a term for the scientist of that era, when this sort of thing was referred to as "Natural Philosophy", and generally meant, Physics or Chemistry , probably the best known of these was Sir Isaac Newton, who is known as a mathematician and physicist to us, but in his own time, was an experimenter and natural philosopher,  and yes he did believe in the philosophers stone, and did experiment in alchemy, for which he could have been jailed, as the religious orthodoxy of his age was against this belief, he was also at one time the head of the British Mint and had six men hung for forgery, in his period in power ! He also was a member of what was a minority form of christianity, that would have also have seen him, imprisoned if he had been found out,

  4. The real philosopher's stone is a mythical substance that could turn metals into gold or provide immortality.  Supposedly, the idea was that if you could combine substances to get new qualiites (bronze, steel), there could be some supersubstance that contained all of the various qualities in nature.
