What is a RAM Upgrade?

Question

My laptop has been lagging a lot lately so I tried removing all the programs I didn't need. I also used the disk cleanup and the defragment program, but it didn't do much.

Then I saw an ad for RAM upgrade.

Something about increasing memory and making your computer faster...?

I'm not a very tech-savy person, so can anyone explain what a RAM is and what the upgrade does?

Also how much would it cost for a RAM upgrade for a laptop (rough estimate?)

RAM=Random access memory,  or simply you computer memory.

RAM upgrade means to add more RAM ( memory ) to you computer, in some cases it can make you computer faster.

RAM is Measure in MB ( Megabytes) 0r in GB ( Gigabytes = 1024 Megabytes)

the recommended RAM is  not less than 512 MB.

you can know how much RAM do you have by right clicking on your MyComputer icon and choose properties , the last line should tell you how much RAM do you have.

there are different types of RAM   (SDRAM, DDR, DDR2,.....) it depends on your laptop.

the price of course depends on the type and the size of he RAM, it should be around 50-100 USD

Stands for Random Access Memory and the more you have, the better your computer will run. Go to www.crucial.com and use their free memory upgrade tool.  Then you will see what you need and how much it will cost to upgrade.  Shop with Tiger Direct and New Egg also to get the best price.

RAM - Random Access Memory.

Pretty much it makes the computer capable of running more programs, faster. It also makes it faster to start up. That's pretty much what it is.

No idea on the cost, depends what you are upgrading it to, (1gb, 2gb etc)

And this along with the Processor govern how fast your computer runs

With Windows Task Manager you can see your RAM usage

If it is much greater than 50% you should think about buying extra RAM

For most laptops the maximum is 4g

if its running VISTA i would reccommend getting at least 2-3g
