What is a Sophomore?

Im Scottish and I live in the UK. I have heard people using this term in movies and on yahoo etc. I know its something to do with college or education of some kind. what does it mean exactly?

It is your second year, like grade 10 in highschool or your second year at college

1st year is freshman

2nd sophmore

3rd junior

4th senior

when you go to high school in the states.. it is

9th grade is freshman

10th grade is sophomore

11th grade is juniors

and finally 12th grade is seniors
