Question:

What is a Submaximal test? And how can my result relate to this...?

I done an experiment in a sport lab to show an increase in heart rate, breathing frequency, volume of carbon dioxide expired and a decrease in oxygen expired from baseline measurements to Submaximal Test (exercise not done to a point where subject cannot exercise anymore).

In my report, I must write about Submaximal Test but I'm not 100% sure what it is, despite looking through various websites and sport excise books.

I have an idea that it measures or predicts fitness level, but how can I relate this with my results?

My report is on biology, cardiovascular system, heart rate and respiration; therefore, must stick closely to these subjects.

  1. One way to determine your overall fitness is to take a Gerkin Fitness Test. Named after the Arizona researcher who designed this test, this submaximal treadmill test (submaximal means the athlete works below maximum effort) is used to predict VO2 max - the volume of oxygen you can consume while exercising at your maximum capacity. The particular test has gained great popularity in the firefighter community. Like most fitness tests, it is classified as a graded exercise test (GXT). The test is stopped at the point the subject's heart rate reaches 85% of their age-predicted maximum.
