I am applying for a community college for some classes... since I'm 23 .... and it says if I wish to declare that I'm an independent I can provide the most recent tax return showing marital status.

I filed for tax return and all... but what is this document they're looking for?

  1. the school is requesting a copy of your tax return or a document from IRS proving you filed.

Use Form 4506-T to request the transcript, a transcript is a line by line of all the information you reported and IRS accepted.

Mail form to appropriate IRS address or fax.

Or visit you local IRS office for the transcript.

  2. FASFA uses a different criteria than the IRS to determine if you are a dependent or not.

If you are under 23, they will only consider you to be "independent" if a) you are married; b) have child and file as head of household; c) your parents are deceased; d) you already have a Bachelor degree and are working on a graduate degree or e) a veteran of the armed services.

In all other cases, they still consider you to be dependent on your parents and will want to take your parent(s) income into consideration.
