What is a Word Ladder?

I saw someone ask something about a Word ladder, and i'm into all kinds of word games and puzzles, can someone explain what a word ladder is? someone elses went something like this..

It is a puzzle in which you are given a start word and an end word. Your objective is to change the start word into the end word by changing one letter at a time.  Each time you change a letter, the result must be a word.

Usually, you want to do it with the shortest number of intervening words.  The start and end words must, of course, have the same number of letters.
