Discreetly ask around your workplace for ideas on how much to spend.  Also, instead of cash it may be more thoughtful to give the couple a gift card (worth whatever amount you choose).  These are available for hundreds of businesses now, and convenient to find -- even in displays near grocery checkout stands.  

For example, you can give the couple a night on the town, such as by choosing a card redeemable at a nice restaurant.  (Make sure it's a LOCAL place . . . Someone once gave my husband and I a gift card for a nice restaurant dinner, but the nearest restaurant in that franchise was 2 hours away!)

Depends on how much you make. 50 to 100 dollars seems reasonable to me but a friend one time told me that they gift depending on the wedding. If you know what they are serving and how much it cost for them to invite you then that is what you should give back. So think 1% reception hall and like $15 for your plate of food and then $2 for cake. Just do the math I know it sounds confusing I hope this helps.

I would discourage giving money: it is impersonal, promotes a mercenary attitude toward invitations and so impairs the spirit of hospitality, and can be offensive by implying that the recipient stands in need of charity.

A non-monetary gift that expresses your creativity and your appreciation of the recipient can carry much greater emotional significance than its monetary value alone would indicate: a book of poetry or pleasant essays, a useful and pretty vase or tray, a small item from their china pattern such as salt-and-pepper shakers.
