I had a idea of what it was before i looked it up. It is a piece of jewelry that protects the person wearing it from harm. Did you ever see the t.v. show ISIS? This woman is a archeologist who uncovers a amulet which transforms her into the Eygptian Goddess ISIS. Usually there is some sort of inscription or picture or diagram on the center usually a symbol or animal.
