  1. In the following four aqua terra columns are prepared for a special series of tests; the method might be a good example to demonstrate the principle of aqua terra column:

    "MATERIALS AND METHODS

Four aqua-terra columns were constructed using plastic two-liter soda bottles. A cloth wick connected the terrestrial (upper) portion of the columns with the aquatic (lower) portion of the columns.

350 ml. of Vermiculite was used in the terrestrial portion of each column to eliminate variables inherent in using potting soil. Similarly, tap water was used in the aquatic portion of the columns, and when watering, because that is what home gardeners would most likely use.

Four sunflower seed were inserted approximately 2 cm. below the surface of the vermiculite. No preparations were added until after germination. The Aqua Terra columns, each housing several plants, were each named: Chloe; Moz; Flash- Gordon; and Betty.

The chemicals were added in the second week, after germination was complete and the plants were at least 4.4 cm. in height each.

Flash Gordon received 10 ml. of Miracle-Gro.

Chloe received 10 ml. of plant vitamins.

Moz received 50 ml. of manure.

    Betty (Control) received no treatment."
