An "ash cat" was a laborer whose job it was to rake the "clinkers" out of the ash pans of coal fired steam locomotives at service facilities.  They were also referred to as "engine wipers".

This is not the same as a "fireman", who was a part of the engine crew, whose nicknames included "fire boy", "tallow pot" and "belly robber".

The Association of Safety & Health Consultants and Trainers, Inc. (ASHCAT) was Incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in NB in 1999. It exists to provide an accountability forum and act as a standard setter for occupational safety and health (OSH) professional members who practice in/outside New Brunswick.

Members of ASHCAT include self-employed private OSH consultants and/or trainers. To maintain public credibility, they must meet stringent standards of professional conduct as outlined in our code of practice/ethics. In addition, ASHCAT members will adhere to professional training/certification standards and areas of competency which are currently being established.

ASHCAT protects both it's members and clients we serve by ensuring that clients receive what they contract for and that members follow association standards in all areas of professional practice. Thus, ASHCAT can offer an important training and human resource to NB enterprises. Furthermore, we are committed to pursuing both continuous improvements in our clients' workplaces and professional excellence and prosperity for all stakeholders.

ASHCAT is currently the only organization offering professional-level training in the OSH discipline in NB. In fact, we may be at the leading edge of this movement in Canada.
