  1. the 250 because a 225 is a dual purpose bike and it weighs a lot more which doesnt help in off roading it.

  2. what do you want it for...

    225 is a 4 stroke=slow

    250 is a 2 stroke=fast

250 is a dirt only....225 is for the road too...

what do you want it for

  3. 250

  4. You have three to choose from and they're all 250s now - no more XT225.

    So let's cover the spectrum...

For mostly on-road use (say 90/10) I think a 250 is quite small. I'd want at least a 450 and would feel the most comfortable on a 650. (I used to have a KLR650 and rode the h**l out of it.)

For 50/50 use (for example, you want to ride on Forest Service land or go on dual-sport rides) you'll still need a street-legal bike. The XT line is very old, I think that the WR250R is a better choice now as it will survive the off-road part better and will keep pace with you as your skills improve.

For 100% off-road get the WR250F or possibly the YZ250F. These offer more aggressive suspension and power.

EDIT: I would not recommend the YZ250 (two-stroke) as a beginner bike, and it's only red-sticker legal so fewer places to ride it. (I used to ride a CR250 so not pooh-pooing 2-strokes pe se - actually I like them best as dirt bikes. But, them times have changed and you have to roll with 'em.)
