I know doing hair won't get me health insurance. But at the same time, wouldn't there be more job openings for doing hair? I am so confused. I think I would like to do hair the most, but at the same time, that would take almost 11 months to finish the program and is pretty costly, but at the same time, if I did a certificate program, that is only 6 months. But would it be harder to find a secretarial/medical record clerk job? If any of you are in one of the mentioned careers, I would really look forward to hearing your thoughts and opinions. What do you think would make more money? Ferris' website says the record clerk generally makes like 7-8 an hour, which isnt much, but I would be able to get health insurance though, right? I am so confused as to what the better move would be! I only have 2 months to figure out for sure what I'm going to do!

  1. Go for the cosmetology job.  It is your passion, you won't be sorry.  Don't go for a job just because you might get health insurance, that's a horrible career incentive.

  2. For the long haul, cosmetology is better.  You work for yourself, set your own pay rates as an independent, and have a greater amount of control over your schedule and life.  Stability is not guaranteed, and unless you have health issues or kids, health insurance is not a pressing matter now.

The downside, gotta get a client base.  My stylist took the pay cut in the beginning to work in a mall outlet for a year or two, and gained enough clients that followed her because she is awesome!  Now, she sets her own hours, answers to no one, and goes on vacation when she wants to.

I did the same as a massage therapist.  took about 6 months, but clientele is there, income is solid, and I only work when I want.

Medical offices don't pay, you have eight hour shifts, gets boring, and you have to beg for time off.
