What is a bite stick..?

Question

I'm getting braces tomorrow (top, bottom, and a bite plate) and my friends that have them say that there's this thing called a bite stick and they put it in your gum (?) and if they get the wrong size your gums will bleed? Is this true? Should I be worried? =/

its something you can bite on during the night when you sleep no need to worry
