What is a block? e.g walk one block from...?

I've lived here in the state for like 5yrs and i really thing is sad that i still dont understand what a Block is. Sometimes when people give me directions they say walk or drive one block and turn right. Still i dont know how to calculate a Block or two. HELP!!

Say for instance they say drive 3 blocks. From one corner to the next is 1 block from that corner to the next is the 2nd block and from that corner to the next is the 3rd block.

In most cities, the street grid is laid out so main streets are perpendicular to each other.  The area made by two adjacent east-west streets and two adjacent north-south streets would be one block.  Usually, this is half a mile on each edge.
