What is a blue ray dvd?

A blue ray dvd is a dvd that uses a blue laser instead of the normal red laser.  This allows it to hold much more information than a standard or an hd dvd, and with better quality.  I haven't heard of many players for it, but it's the Playstation 3's main point of interest.

be sides everybody Say's  it also holds up to 7 tomes more information and is only capable to reproduce hd formats......in other words...is the future......like when the VHS got dumped by the DVD.....u should be happy ....u can tell ur grand kids that u where living when that happen...

There are two different competing technologies for recording HDTV on a disc; Blu-Ray is one of them.  (It is called that because it uses a blue laser beam to read the disc.)  The squabble reminds one of the fight between VHS and Betamax some years ago; the Betamax system was slightly better technically but the recording time was less, and VHS won.

blu ray is read with a different laser.  it can read the lines on a disc much closer together than a dvd laser can.  bluray discs are 25 gb as opposed to dvds which are 9gb of storage. and finally the images can be displayed in HD, basically at a higher resolution.  while dvd displays at 480p (can be upscaled but still not the same digital resolution as bluray), bluray displays at 1080p, a MUCH sharper image.  as of now, for the price the ps3 is the best bluray player on the market.  

and on a side note, dont worry about hd dvd... its dead =)
