When police do this what does it mean exactly? Like a strip search?

It is more than a strip search.  It involves close viewing and probing with fingers or instruments in the ears, nose, mouth, r****m, and v****a or p***s.

Body cavities are generally the anal/rectal area, the vaginal area on women, the scrotal area on guys, and perhaps the mouth / throat as well.

The inspection may be visual or it may be digital (using fingers).
