Actually I went to a bridal shower and one of the guests made a basket and in the basket it had an item for every letter of the alphabet.  It was really cute she had Ajax, basket, corn holders...all the way to Z.  I think her "E" was an electric can opener.

I think it sounds fun! She probably just wants to ensure she doesn't get duplicate gifts, and this is a neat alternative to registering. You've had some great suggestions. You could get anything and say it is an "elegant gift." I wish I could add more, but I think anything else I come up with would just be redundant. Good luck!
