A bridgetender is a person who operates a drawbridge or a swingbridge over a body of water. In this case, you would raise the drawbridge (or open a swingbridge) whenever a vessel that is too tall to clear the bridge needs to pass. After the vessel passes, you close or lower the bridge to permit rail traffic through.
