  1. You become a Buddhist by taking a refuge vow, which is...

You agree to take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma (the codes by which Buddhists live their lives),  and the Sangha (the spiritual community.)

A Buddhist is someone who follows the tenants of Buddhism, as taught by the Buddha in roughly 500 B.C.E. To explain all of the tenants of Buddhism in the amount of detail that I feel would do the teachings justice would take quite some time. I reccomend a book called  "The Foundations of Buddhism" By Rupert Guthin which is easy to read and will give you a good idea

  2. Buddhism is a state of free thinking, emotional emancipation and spiritual release. The spiritual state of utopian nirvana is gained by the liberation from fear, the unshackling of the vice like grip of ignorance, the delivery from the bonds of desire, resulting not in long term peace or bliss.

An open minded study of wisdom, philosophy, scriptures or a firm faith in the truth or word of such a pastoral preacher are ways and paths to this ultimate supreme condition of living. Good Luck.

  3. Give away all of your posessions and walk the Earth.  Personal Property - out.  Selfishness - gone.  View the world and try to learn from it.  Search for the ultimate goodness.  Then one day you might make it to nirvana.

This is a very simplified explanation.  I had some books on buddhism (they were $2 each or 2 for $5, hahahahahaha) but this girl never gave them back to me.  Some buddhist she turned out to be.

You can find out more and gain an understanding of the basic principles here:

  4. The ultimate goal is to become the Buddha, and the Buddha is a common person who has achieved controlling all thoughts (i.e. no thought comes to the mind unless the self wills the thought). The worldly desires are transitory, and this is suppose to be understood thoroughly because from these desires spring illusions and illusions are the root cause of "evil" - sadness, guilt, etc.

There is a book I just finished called The Essence of Life by Master Jian Liao. It explains a few basic Buddhist attributes quite well; pick it up if you get a chance.
