its usually the same thing as timing chain tensioner,and helps keep the chain running strait on it,when it wears out though it will allow the chain to move around causing it to put unnecessary wear on the chain and gears on it,when you replace a chain and gears always replace the guides along with the tensioners,good luck

its a guide just like it sounds like it keep the chain guided to the right place, most of the time its hard plastic and wears out about the same time as chain
