What is a car battery? And where is it situated in the car?

Hey there, I always hear people mentioning 'batteries' in their car. I was just wondering what this battery actually did? How big it is and where is it situated in the car? Like can you find it under the bonnet? I thought the engine ran the car, so what does the battery do?!

the battery gives the car the energy to start. the engine keeps it going. if you lift the hood, it is the square thing with a bit of red and black on the top.

The engine does run the car but when u twist ur keys the battery starts the car then the engine takes over

The batterie is situated anywhere under the bonnet depending on the make of car
