Just a random fact for you, but owing to advances in veterinary science they are now able to sterilise a male horse without removing his testicles.  The International Stud Book Committee are now looking into a new name which they can use to descibe these animals as "gelding" would not be the correct term:

Horse Racing: Gelding and coat colourings under review by ISBC

    BLOODSTOCK DESK

    Published: 12/10/2007 (Sport) Howard Wright

A NEW definition of a gelding and fresh descriptions for coat colourings are expected to emerge from the International Stud Book Committee in the coming weeks, writes Howard Wright.

Modern surgical procedure, which sterilises a colt without removing his testicles, has prompted a rethink on a process that was previously carried out simply through castration, and is liable to cause confusion at the point of sale and on the racecourse.

As well as finding a new definition, the ISBC has agreed that a note of the new veterinary practice should be entered in the horse's passport, indicating that the testicles were still present.

Traditional descriptions of coat colouring among thoroughbreds have been muddied by the recent emergence of more diverse colours, mainly from North America, which led to the colour palamino being recognised in 2004 and overo last year.

The recent ISBC meeting was presented with further examples, notably in France, of horses showing a divergence from traditional coat colours, and it has been decided that members should give further consideration to providing suggested descriptions that could lead to a single agreed colour term.

THE number of ISBC approved stud books has reached 64, with the addition of Croatia. Serbia is expected to join the list in December, and Lithuania, where the thoroughbred foal crop last year was two, is planning to seek approval next year.
