What is a chav???????

Question

Okay so I live in America, in northern California. I've never been to England. I had never heard this word before except from surfing the web, on this website and also urbandictionary. From what I gathered a chav is a kid who wears athletic clothes and tacky jewelery, and tries to be tough, and wears burberry. That sounds to me like it would look kind of stupid, at least in the U.S.A, but maybe I'm missing something. Help me out?

yeah i hear it online too and I read it on urbandictionary a few times..i wonder what the american equivalent of a 'chav' is
