  1. for about $100 you can get Garmin eTrex Legend

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000058...

  2. Since you want to keep things simple, go for the Garmin eTrex H.  It has what they call a high-sensitivity receiver, which will help it work better in wooded areas or other challenging signal environments.  The eTrex H doesn't let you load maps, but you can send waypoints/caches, tracks, and I think routes between the GPS receiver and the computer.

I recommend getting the optional data cable for the eTrex if you are going to use it for geocaching.  Entering coordinates and names manually gets old real quick.  You don't have to worry about entering the coordinates wrong either, if you are sending them from the PC.

Lastly, don't confuse the eTrex H with the eTrex.  They are both yellow and look very similar, but the "regular' eTrex has an old receiver that doesn't work as well in the woods.  I recommend the eTrex H over the blue eTrex Legend because it has the higher sensitivity receiver.  The Legend lets you add up to 8MB of maps, but you said you don't care about that.  However, it does include the data cable with the GPS receiver.  You'll have to decide what's worth more - the cable or improved sensitivity.  The Legend costs around $120 or so, the eTrex H goes for around $90.
