i think suzuki makes some more ghetto ones, but honestly, you cant beat honda and toyota for reliability, and the mileage on those 2 is great

The Nissan Rogue is a good inexpensive SUV.  It just came out and people are very happy with the car.  It gets godd gas mileage, is roomy, safe, and reliable for as low as $19250.

2008 Ford Escape Hybrid 2WD, base price $25,075 MSRP, currently qualifies for a $3,000 tax rebate from the Federal Government.  30+ miles a gallon.  (official EPA estimate combined 34mpg.)

Much lower maintenance than normal cars--  Regenerative braking means no brake jobs until 100K miles, no starter, no alternator, no timing belt to wear out.  And a very tough single-gearset Power Split Device transmission which has no gear-shifting, no clutch, no torque converter, no belts.  8-year / 100K mile warranty on the hybrid battery--  It dies before then, Ford replaces it for free.

The only other SUVs with this kind of reliability are the Lexus RX-h and the Toyota Highlander Hybrids (they also use the Power Split Device transmission), but they are not cheap.

The Escape Hybrid is perfect for commuters who need a reasonably roomy car.

I'm going to guess that you are looking for an SUV because you need the room. The best choice is a mid to late 90's Chevy Suburban. It will get close to 20mpg on the highway, cost less than $5,000  and will last forever. If 20mpg doesn't sound that good just remember that the Ford Explorer and the Chevy S-10 Blazers were pieces of junk, small and got around 22mpg on the highway. You will not get great mileage out of an SUV, even the small ones.
