What is a cheap way for me to learn how to surf?

buy a used longboard, or rent a board and get out to a beach on a small day.  Work on paddling, and standing up.  once you have that down, you can look forward to the next step.  Remember, the best surfer is the one having the most fun.

Skate boarding for balance, then hanging out at a surf beach. Possibly renting or maybe buying a used board.

Buy an "Indo Board."  It's the quickest way to aquire the balance you need for any board sport.  And it's pretty dang cheap too.
