  1. -  Literally 70 miles due east is in the North Sea.

    -  Margate is about 75 miles driving from central London. It is basically the tip of the peninsula for Southeast England.

    -  It would be difficult to say since there are no major cities on this peninsula. It could be anyone of dozens of villages or towns, or regions.

    ====================

    It is possible that he referred to his home by the county name. The two counties east of London are Kent and Essex.

    Kent, pop. 1,634,500

    Essex, pop. 1,670,000

  2. Directly 70 miles east of London would probably land you in the sea, towns nearest might be Great Yarmouth, Norwich, Colchester, Ipswich. Goodness knows though, because a tad north might land you in Cambridge or a Tad south might land you in Southend (although that's a lot less than 70 miles. Why not have a look on google earth and see if it rings any bells.

  3. There is not a single city to the east of London, just smaller towns

  4. 70 miles due east of London is the Thames Estuary/North Sea.

    The most likely candidate is Colchester, which is north-east of London.

  5. Could be Canterbury - about 65 miles from London

  6. Colchester, maybe? That's just under 70 miles east of London.

    Or Margate: again, around 70 miles away...

    Harwich is further... about 80 miles from London.

    Why don't you pull up a Google or multimap map of London and have a quick look at the towns to the east. There aren't that many. =)  http://www.multimap.com/maps/?lat=51.466...
