What is a clause and how can you find out what type it is?

I realize this is elementary and basic, but we haven't discussed clauses in school in a loooong time. How can you tell if a clause is independent or dependent/subordinate?

I haven't reviewed these in years, too, but I think if it's independent it can stand alone as a sentence but a dependent clause needs some other words to make a sentence :) Hope I've helped!
