What is a codec..wen i put a video in my computer the sound works but theres no picture?

i downloaded videos from my camera

i tried this on windows media player and it doesnt work

i can only here the cound and i cant see no moving picture

i also imported the video on windows movie player and it doesnt work it says The file C file cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

Well *I* thought a codec was a little device you put on your throat that acts like a walkie talkie.  Go to the camera companies site and search codec on it.  if it doesn't have a search function, go to google and type site:http://<whatever the site is here> then put a space and type codec
