Its herpes but it's different than genital herpes. I get them on my nose and its gross. If you have a problem with cold sores go to a dermatologist and they'll probably give you valtrex.

Lacie: They give you valtrex for cold sores because even though a cold sore is a different form of herpes than the genital kind, it can still be treated with the same kind of medicine. As someone who has gone through a lot of embarrassment and pain because of cold sores, I'm glad that they have a medication that can help me. It is embarrassing having to fill my prescription because of all the negative ideas people have about STDs. I don't want people to think I have genital herpes because I'm afraid of being judged. Most people find it easy to pass judgment on a person who has an STD but you or any other person who is sexually active could end up in the same boat. Also, a friend of mine who has a form of the herpes virus told me that most people have the virus in their bodies, but it only manifests itself in some people.

Edit: Isn't Valtex the commercial for the genital herpes? :D Why would they give you that for cold sores???

Edit to turtleparty: I just asked a question...wasn't pointing fingers at you :) Last I checked at least 50% (though I've heard it to be more like 98%) of sexually active people have some form of HPV which can cause genital warts...not herpes. I certainly wasn't judging...and I highly doubt that I fall into that slim 2%. Herpes is much less common, but is related to the cold sores. I believe your friend was referring to HPV (human papillomavirus) ~ it's very unlikely to be sexually active and not have some form of HPV.

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. See the link I provided for some great info...
