  1. Paper Towels


  2. Start with stuff you KNOW you'll need, and group them according to use...

    Food-

    hamburger patties

    hot dogs

    buns for both

    mayo/miracle whip

    mustard

    ketchup

    marshmallows

    chocolate bars

    graham crackers

    chips

    potato salad

    roasting sticks and other cooking utensils

    dutch oven

    (ingredients for whatever dutch oven dish)

    salt

    pepper

    disposable dishes- cups, plates, forks

    paper towels

    Bedding-

    sleeping bag

    spare blankets

    pillow

    foam pad (sleeping on rocks sucks!!)

    tent

    camping chairs

    fresh clothes

    flashlight and fresh batteries

    Spare Time-

    card games

    coloring book and crayons

    frisbee

    ball and glove

    notepad and pen(cil)

    Fire Starting-

    ax

    hatchet

    small saw

    matches

    lighter

    Toiletries (depending on amenities available)-

    soap

    shampoo

    washcloth

    towel

    TOILET PAPER!!!

    lotion (dust can dry the skin pretty fast)

    feminine pads (if you're a girl)

    shovel (in case you have to dig your own toliet)

    First Aid-

    Bandaids

    ointment

    iodine or rubbing alcohol

    Ace bandage

    guaze

    water purifying tablets

    Start these lists a week or so before the trip, and as you think of things through the days, add to them. A lot that is on these lists depends on how rough you plan to "rough it"

  3. good lists are available online and at any REI store. your list will be refined as you go more, My personal rule is if I take it on 2 trips and do not use it, the item will not go on a third. And always try to take stuff that is good for multiple purposes.

  5. This is my checklist I use for backpack/camping. You should check with your friends/family to see what they're taking so that you can lighten your load and not double up taking more equipment than you need. Items with * are ones that you could share:

    gorp (trail snacks)

    flashlight/headlamp (plus extra batteries)

    matches/lighter

    spade/shovel

    2 1L Nalgene water bottles

    dehydrated meal packs (x+1 days)

    candle lantern (w/ x+1 candles)*

    repair kits (pack, pad, stove, filter, etc.)

    clothing (pants, shirt, underwear, socks, fleece)

    water in gallon form and bottles to drink from

    cooking grill and utinsils to cook with pots, pans and coffee pot

    something that offers shade, a hammock and maybe chairs or chases

    games like dice and dominoes (not cards they blow away in the wind)

    lantern and stove to cook on

    sleeping bags and pillow

    sunscreen, sunglasses and hats

    hiking shoes and sandals

    long pants and shorts, long sleeve shirts and shortsleeve, sweatsuit, thin and thick socks, underwear and at least a nylon wind (rain) breaker

    broom and a throw rug

    charcoal briquettes, lighter fluid and fire wood (fire permit if needed)
