What is a common rumor you know that can be concretely proven wrong?

I am looking for examples of commonly-made assumptions that have already been proven wrong, especially ones that have damaged someone or something's reputation or otherwise negatively impacted.

  1. How about Hillary being able to answer the hard questions because she was in the white house?  There were plenty of hard questions in the '90s, and did she answer those then?  What happened to universal health care then, for example?

  10. That john kerry is a traitor to his country, it may have cost him the presidency, ie, the "swiftboat" incident. The guy earned a purple heart. The military aint that clueless. It was just that upon returning kerry publically denounced the vietnam war, which angered his fellow soldiers, who were willing to make those ads for the sake of helping the republican party.
